New & Retrofit Circuit Breakers

Our first design of vacuum retrofit breaker was to replace Reyrolle S36A 11kV 750MVA breakers at Ratcliffe power station, near Nottingham. Apart from the need to replace the old and worn out breakers, changes to the electrical system at Ratcliffe had increased the fault level beyond the capabilities of the original breaker design.

The P&B retrofit breaker was designed to accommodate this increase in rating from 39kA to 53kA at 11kV and type testing was performed on a retrofit breaker in an original cubicle to demonstrate the complete switchgear was satisfactory for the enhanced rating.

Since this first P&B retrofit breaker was introduced we have designed, type tested and supplied vacuum breakers to replace oil and air circuit breakers from many UK manufacturers into a variety of installations.

We continue to develop and introduce new retrofit designs for older switchgear.

  • Increased operating reliability and safety
  • Higher short circuit ratings available – we have developed retrofits for short circuit ratings up to 63kA rms and over 150kApeak.
  • Reduced maintenance and environmental impact
  • Service life of switchgear can be extended by up to 30 years
